Boundaries of two-dimensional – three-dimensional, painting – sculpture, virtual space – real space, illusion –materiality
I have been interested in the expression of three-dimensional object in a two-dimensional world of drawing, and the expression of three-dimensional objects and space on a flat surface. When drawing, no matter how hard you try to gain volume on a flat surface, a drawn object cannot become three-dimensional. Therefore, I set the major elements of the main topic as conceptually seen paintings (two-dimensional) and sculptures (three-dimensional), and started exploring the boundaries. – Possibility of a Flat Surface Becoming Three-dimensional – When considering the difference between these two elements, the important concept of "Weight" is born, and we can distinguish these two clearly. For example, when we look at a flat art, we are not generally conscious about the weight of the paper or canvas, but a sculpture often sets the existence of the piece by its weight. While thinking in this manner, I tried the following practices:
– Weightless sculpture
– Three-dimensional object consisting of drawing (sculpture)
–Sculpture of a drawing that expresses three-dimensional object
These contradictions make our perceptions mad and transform the surrounding perceptual space.
Dessin/volume
It is a series that I have been deploying since 1999. They are three-dimensional drawings that are realized from various angles and approaches including the boundary between two-dimensional and three-dimensional, drawings (lines) that run through real space, lines with weight, weightless three-dimensional objects, etc. I have also created a large piece with 2m width. Currently, I mainly realize and create three-dimensional simulation (objects) as "Dessin/volume" that are modeled using 3D software.
While the spread of computers in our daily lives is currently progressing, I want to focus on the concept of digital space. The virtual space created by these is a nonmaterial, independent perceptual space, and the difference in perceptual experience that is born while going back and forth between real space and virtual space encourages the transformation of our spatial perception. Materialistic, real perceptual space is being transformed.
Three-dimensional space on a monitor is flat, but we can see the existence of a three-dimensional space there. I include and emphasize the two opposing elements of this "Illusion (optical illusion)" and materiality into one object. Currently, I create three-dimensional objects in digital space and material work in real space in parallel. Based on these two perceptual experiences, I want to contemplate the materialistic, real perceptual space again and expand the possibility of expression while analyzing the difference in the perception level.
